Park insights at a glance.
The main Trailhead entrance is located on 7th Ave with more parking around the side of Orange Grove Middle School. There is an ADA accessible trail section along the bioswale that is about 0.3 miles in length. The Coyote and Puma Trails are restricted to only hiking and leashed dogs, but the other sections are open to biking and horseback riding.
The trailhead is open between 9:00 AM – 6:00PM from June 1st through September 30th and 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM from October 1st through May 31st. If you enter the trail at a later hour, keep in mind that the main entrance on 7th Ave is locked by the Park Ranger promptly at the listed closing hour and there is a fee to charge if you are stuck behind the gate after closing. The parking area directly at the entrance is also subject to fines if you are parking after hours as well.
If you are near the top of the Schabarum Skyline Trail and do not think you can make it back to the entrance on time before closing, you could also exit via the the fire road entrance on Skyline Drive. Then go through Descending Dr, to Oak Canyon Dr, to Avocado Terrace, to Las Tunas Dr which will finally merge to Orange Grove Ave that will take you back to the Trailhead Entrance on 7th Ave. Keep in mind that these small roads down these hills do not have a designated sidewalk so be aware of your surrounding. However, most of these roads do happen to be part of the nest area so you will see the nest spawns passing through.
You may have issues with your cell signal especially in deeper/lower parts of the canyons so this might not be an optimal place to catch pokemon depending on your cell service provider. If you happen to go with friends, you might be able to use hotspot with whomever has the best reception.
Also, keep an eye out for the real wildlife while looking for the digital ones! Rattlesnakes and Coyotes can be found occasionally but you can sometimes see Mule Deer too.
Many regular hikers tend to go up to the Water Tower at the top of Turnbull Canyon, however this nest seems to end a little past the Skyline Trail and start nest spawns for Turnbull Canyon.
